WADOO!!NEWS: A Gataway strategy to compete in Nigerian mobile market

BARELY six months after making entry into Nigeria, French mobile phone maker, Wiko Mobile has unveiled a new device, Wiko Gataway, which seems strategic to how it is going to be rated in the market. No doubt, the company eyes the top spot of the market but to do that it has a lot of wars to fight and win.

Interestingly the war in the mobile market is not a physical one. It’s mainly on innovation and strategy. However, Wiko believes it has all it takes and wants all to believe that a whiff of it could be experienced in the Gataway.

First of all, with Gataway, Wiko tries to  get away from the normal high end/ low end classification which gives only the high income earners the opportunity to enjoy premium applications. But here Getaway spots premium applications on a low cost price arrangement. This seems to bridge the choice gap between the middle and high income earners and to Wiko this is a breakaway strategy.

The device comes packaged in a see-through fibre-glass container; apparently a deliberate step up strategy from basic hard-paper packaging of other phones including some of Wiko’s older models. A sticker which captures a few of the phone specs, runs across the bottom and on the back.

Look and feel

This device is definitely stylish. It comes with a lot of the hardware features that the more expensive brands boast of; Aluminum bezel, textured mock-leather back casing, 7.2mm thin  and 133g in lightness. It also spots a Gorilla glass screen, making it scratch-proof, dual-SIM slots, a 13 megapixel back camera and 5 megapixels on the front.

Three capacitive touch buttons line the bottom of the device just above the rose-gold metal front bezel. The overall look is simply beautiful. Another thing I love about the hardware is the location of the volume rockers; it makes for much easier access considering it’s a rather large and long device.

Although the phone doesn’t have that many distinctive features, it’s a pleasant enough experience software-wise. It comes loaded with stock Android which means the user interface, UI, isn’t customized at all. So if you’re not a fan of stock android, you should consider downloading a launcher on the Google play store.

On speed and fluidity, the 1.3GHz quad-core processor is expected to performs beautifully. The phone comes with a non-removable battery which is known to last longer. Wiko says one charge should last about 20 hours if not more.
